Thoughts About a Small Business Thanksgiving

It’s the day before Thanksgiving, and I hope you are able to knock off work a bit early today to start a weekend of relaxing time with family and friends.

As a small business owner, you work hard for what you have. Some days, you don’t have time to breathe, let alone stop and reflect, but Thanksgiving is a great time to give thanks for everything that has contributed to your success along the way:

  • Innovative ideas. That original spark that led you to business in the first place. That unique idea that you have been able to develop, market, and sell. Your ideas and innovations make your business stand out in the marketplace.
  • Growth. Never forget those first few years in business. Those years represent a series of hard-won battles that have led to your current growth and success. Give thanks for all the lessons they taught you and for your new perspective as an emerging business owner. If you are still in those start-up years, take heart that this time is leading you to future growth and development as a business and as an individual.
  • Your people. Whether you are a solo enterprise or have grown to employ hundreds, people are at the core of what makes your business work and unique. When you surround yourself with intelligent, motivated people, you all benefit from the results. If it’s just you, stop and think about your family, friends, and your whole network. Those people have supported you along the way, and they are a part of your business journey. While you’re at it, pat yourself on the back for your perseverance and determination.
  • New beginnings. Even if some of your ideas and ventures have fallen flat, give thanks that offer a new start each day. New ideas, new people, and fresh opportunities are out there to help make the next phase of your journey smoother.

Happy Thanksgiving! Enjoy the spoils of the harvest.
